During this video, m_it99 produced 50 starter kits for new players, but when they attempted to distribute them they found that many players were uninterested. m_it99 questioned whether giving away kits with armour and resources was really what new players wanted, or if instead they wanted to forge their own story and survive independently.<blockquote>After that first kit, I'm not joking, I couldn't seem to hand out another one. Not because people weren't logging on, in fact, there were tons of new players, but every time I messaged one of them to ask if they wanted a kit, I almost never got a response. And when I did, it was usually a no, which made me wonder if this was really a good idea. It seems most players don't want free gear and would rather go through the progression of the game by themselves. Was I really helping or just taking some of the fun out of the server?

The sentiment that the fun of early-game progression is lost when receiving a kit has existed for almost as long as philanthropy. The philosophy holds that the early game is one of the most immersive, fun and memorable parts of the hardcore experience, and that giving out starter kits therefore takes away from new players rather than helping them. It stands in opposition to Locism.

Beliefs
Mitism holds that individual progression and the tension from early-game hazards and resource scarcity create memorable and meaningful experiences on Legendary Hardcore. Under Mitism, kits given out detract from the enjoyment and immersion of the server. A player's first hours on Legendary Hardcore are often their most formative, and many players players come to miss the experience of the early game once they are established in the late game. This feeling is felt by some players to such an extent that they attempt the Chili Challenge, in which they give up their possessions and travel to the Spawn Region to restart their progression.

Origin
The sentiment that the fun of early-game progression is lost when receiving a kit has existed for almost as long as philanthropy. The philosophy was articulated by m_it99 in a video titled I Saved 50 Players From Certain Death, who which the philosophy takes its name.

[...]

If all these players I'm messaging are saying they don't want kits, then what's going to change in the future? Are these players going to suddenly want kits allowing me to hand out all 50? I don't think so. What I've realized from all of this is that most players want to prove that they can survive. And most importantly, this server is about more than just being alive. It's about surviving. So, even though I still have a bunch of kits left, I'm not going to hand them out. Instead, I'm going to let these players face the challenges that make this server so enjoyable.
